CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Daichi Shijima
Age: 18
Canon: Devil Survivor 2
Canon Point: Post Liberator Ending
Character Information: Daichi, Game as a whole
Personality: There’s a certain role in a lot of fiction that Daichi seems to slot right into, and that’s ‘comedically failing best friend’. And that first assumption isn’t wrong. Daichi Shijima is utterly loyal, but beset upon by life from the very start of the game. He’s a normal teenage boy, more interested in his new driver’s license and meeting girls then his upcoming finals- his childhood is almost over, and soon he will be resigned to the fate of a salary man at best. And he wants to avoid thinking about it for as long as possible.
Then the world ends, and this way of life is doomed. Everyday is a chance he might die- in fact he comes close to death over and over, and his lackadaisical view is shattered so he can survive. He spends a lot of the time bemoaning the fact that him and his friends are kids, and that they shouldn’t be the ones having to fight to save the world. It’s not an anime or video game: this is REAL, and they are not prepared for it in the least. He bites back his terror to save his friends- driving a truck right into an exploding alien and almost dying. But afterward he doesn’t really seem to get how close he came to death. Yet. This gets even worse once he’s kidnapped by rioters. The fact of his own mortality hit’s him hard, making it even harder for him to put himself in danger. Unlike the others, he can see the longterm effects this crisis lays out, and they TERRIFY him.
But with the protagonist’s help, he slowly comes to terms with things, and learns that some things are worth fighting for even if you’re scared. That sometimes you have to stop thinking and just DO. While this seems like a good lesson (and it is) it also leads to the grim future Daichi comes from when he arrives in Ryslig- the Liberator ending. As Yamato and Ronaldo battle for allies to take to see Polaris, Daichi wonders why they are fighting at all. That such extreme views can’t be what humanity as a whole wants, and that forcing these new regimes is cruel and unfair. But he doesn’t have the force of personality or the will to really explain his wants to the others. Thankfully the protagonist and Hinako help him line everything up. Instead of following the two forces they will make their own. Normally, this leads to them reversing time and undoing the crisis. But there’s another drive that Daichi has that, in this time line, comes to light.
Even if they turn things back, it could all happen again. Why are they kowtowing to the ‘god’ that did this to them in the first place? He says it in passing, but the others latch on to this idea. Instead of obeying Polaris they should take revenge. Kill the ‘god’ and take humanity’s fate back into their own hands. Freedom.
This shows a huge character growth for Daichi. A drive he either never had or just refused to see before the crisis. And while he never takes over as leader (the protagonist still has that role) it shows him having a deep foresight the others really don’t. He ponders the moral and emotional fallout of the last week instead of just living in the current moment. Though even after they win he states that… he’s not sure what to do now, to which the protagonist replies… anything. It’s time for Daichi to take the future in his own hands instead of riding the waves of the world around him. They are free. At a horrible cost, but free, and no one will be there to protect them but themselves. It’s a huge change that Daichi is still processing.
Over all Daichi is in many ways still a kid. A kid on the edge of a terrifying reality he wasn’t ready for. He’s still playful and goofy and girl crazy, more interested in goofing off then being responsible. He gets too eager, or too pouty on a dime, and still likes to crow about his (tiny) achievements. He still gets scared easily and is prone to bolting if allowed. But his loyalty and foresight have been forced out due to the week of hell he’s lived through. He can’t return to his innocent life. But he’s devoted to what’s right and wrong, even if it’s the harder path. Unlike many he hasn’t lost his way in the name of the ‘greater good’ and still hates fighting and hurting others. He’s the bravest of cowards, he just hasn’t fully realized it yet.
5-10 Key Character Traits:
-Loyal
-Thoughtful
-Cowardly
-Goofy
-Brave (which hilariously conflicts with the fact that he’s also a coward. Depends on the set up and if he has time to think)
-Easily worried
-Slightly Perverted
-Pacifistic
-’Big Picture’/Longterm thinking
-Unlucky
Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, or EITHER? Either!
Opt-Outs: I would just prefer he not double up with Neku on Manticore!
Roleplay Sample: Test drive meme!
